An Ode to Regina Hall

When thinking of actors who elevate and expand in their careers, Regina Hall is of that echelon. She arrived as Candy, an exotic dancer, in the film THE BEST MAN. She was alluring and in charge of her body and self. Her role evolved in THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY, informing her past to propel her present.

She delivered comedy in the SCARY MOVIE franchise and MALIBU’S MOST WANTED. As a Black woman in Hollywood, the characters she played could have been stereotypically loud. With her performance, the characters are bold.

She starred as Monica’s sister in LOVE & BASKETBALL. She was also in the THINK LIKE A MAN films. Her work in BLACK MONDAY found her as a female lead surrounded by dominant male energy, as per the story, with humor and panache. She was in LAW ABIDING CITIZEN. In NINE PERFECT STRANGERS, Regina is an ensemble actor that once again shows her talent.

Regina starred in GIRL’S TRIP, furthering her comedic capabilities in the blockbuster film. She played Lisa, a mother caring for her Black daughter amidst racial tensions, in the adaptation of the bestselling and pivotal novel THE HATE U GIVE. One of my favorite performances from Regina was in SUPPORT THE GIRLS. The film shows her ability to lead and bring an array of emotions with her performance.

LITTLE was a film released in 2019. As you may know, many films are adaptations, remakes, and reimaginings. LITTLE was an original idea by Marsai Martin, who at 13 years old also executive produced the film. Issa Rae also starred in the film. To see them in their careers, in an original story, was a joy onscreen.

Regina will be a co-host of the Oscars with Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer. Regina hosted the BET Awards in 2019 at the height of the Don’t Mute DC movement. Regina is a D.C. native. She highlighted the movement in the opening of the show that year. The opening was a go-go good time. To highlight the movement on one of the biggest stages in entertainment was astounding and true to how Regina raises her voice for awareness.

Regina will star in HONK FOR JESUS. SAVE YOUR SOUL. She is also in MASTER, streaming on Amazon Prime Video, as a schoolmaster at an elite university in New England where the school is believed to be cursed. She is inventing the thriller genre.

Regina Hall in her decades-long career plays to her command. Her slew of performances, certainly not all covered, only show where she is still to go.

Thank you, Regina, for your dedication to your work and your being. Your greatness is a testament to the foundation you lay for everyone who admires your work, no matter the industry.
