Today’s featured essay is a short one dripping in metaphor. Her Stubborn Suitcase is all about the baggage we carry around and need help unpacking. We can’t unpack it alone. Then I sit down with executive business coach Kelly Roach, former NFL cheerleader turned Fortune 500 executive turned super successful entrepreneur. You’ll love listening to how she got where she is today, the failures and triumphs that lead her on this path, and her refreshing approach to building a high-earning business all while balancing being a wife and mother. One of the many highlights is her 4 year old daughter Madison’s appearance, proving that life is messy and beautiful and don’t worry, Madison assures us that the ocean is still blue.

Her Stubborn Suitcase
Hesitantly, she rolls her suitcase into a new office one more time, hoping this time she’ll be given the tools to unpack it. She nervously sets it on the ground and begins to unzip it. She’s done this so many times before and nothing has worked. No one has been able to help her. She wonders why she even tries. Swallowing her fear and bracing for disappointment, she opens the suitcase and looks up into a face of genuine compassion. Trust me, they say, and she begins to cry. She’s not good at this part. They ask her a key question: What hasn’t worked here? She takes a deep breath and lists all the tools that look like they’ll help her unpack everything but feels the frustration all over again, knowing the good intentions have failed her so many times before. The nurturing face listens and nods. Finally they say, Let’s try something completely different, and they map out a whole new strategy unlike anything she’s ever tried before. She feels hopeful, skeptical, and a little relieved. She hands over the keys to the suitcase, hopefully for the last time, and looks at the mess inside. We’re going to sort you out once and for all, she says.
